”Mortality after the 2003 invasion of Iraq: A cross-sectional cluster sample survey”, by Burnham et al (2006, Lancet, www.thelancet.com): An Approximate Confidence Interval for Total Number of Violent Deaths in the Post Invasion Period

چکیده
The following confidence interval is relying on the assumption that the design succeeded in obtaining a random sample of 47 geographical clusters of 40 households among the total population of Iraq households. As pointed out in our article (van der Laan, de Winter, 2006), beyond the fact that the used design should have been informed by known violence levels in Iraq and could thereby be strongly improved, we are concerned about a number of potential biases in the actual obtained sample which will only widen the confidence interval, and might even make it impossible to draw any conclusions based on a statistical foundation. Addressing some of these concerns will require additional information beyond the information provided in the Lancet article. To name a few of our concerns:

Mortality after the 2003 invasion of Iraq: a cross-sectional cluster sample survey.
BACKGROUND An excess mortality of nearly 100 000 deaths was reported in Iraq for the period March, 2003-September, 2004, attributed to the invasion of Iraq. Our aim was to update this estimate. METHODS Between May and July, 2006, we did a national cross-sectional cluster sample survey of mortality in Iraq. 50 clusters were randomly selected from 16 Governorates, with every cluster consisting ...
متن کاملMortality before and after the 2003 invasion of Iraq: cluster sample survey.
BACKGROUND In March, 2003, military forces, mainly from the USA and the UK, invaded Iraq. We did a survey to compare mortality during the period of 14.6 months before the invasion with the 17.8 months after it. METHODS A cluster sample survey was undertaken throughout Iraq during September, 2004. 33 clusters of 30 households each were interviewed about household composition, births, and death...
متن کاملConfidence intervals for the population mean tailored to small sample sizes, with applications to survey sampling.
The validity of standard confidence intervals constructed in survey sampling is based on the central limit theorem. For small sample sizes, the central limit theorem may give a poor approximation, resulting in confidence intervals that are misleading. We discuss this issue and propose methods for constructing confidence intervals for the population mean tailored to small sample sizes. We presen...
متن کاملViolence-related mortality in Iraq from 2002 to 2006.
BACKGROUND Estimates of the death toll in Iraq from the time of the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003 until June 2006 have ranged from 47,668 (from the Iraq Body Count) to 601,027 (from a national survey). Results from the Iraq Family Health Survey (IFHS), which was conducted in 2006 and 2007, provide new evidence on mortality in Iraq. METHODS The IFHS is a nationally representative survey of 9...
متن کاملMortality in Iraq Associated with the 2003–2011 War and Occupation: Findings from a National Cluster Sample Survey by the University Collaborative Iraq Mortality Study
BACKGROUND Previous estimates of mortality in Iraq attributable to the 2003 invasion have been heterogeneous and controversial, and none were produced after 2006. The purpose of this research was to estimate direct and indirect deaths attributable to the war in Iraq between 2003 and 2011. METHODS AND FINDINGS We conducted a survey of 2,000 randomly selected households throughout Iraq, using a...
